Jac finally tracked Kit down to a small room in the attic of the main house. It was almost empty, his few belongings already packed up. He was sitting on a grey blanket on the boarded floor, all that remained for his last night at the Warren. She looked around awkwardly, unsure where to start.

‘I’ve come to make peace for spying on you today. Not sure if there’s a protocol, everyone’s too busy to ask.’

‘It’s all right. I know. I tried to make it easy by not going off without you.’ In the absence of a chair he waved her to sit on the small bundle of his things.

‘Was I that obvious?’

‘No, nothing you did. But like I said, Raine’s been training me for a couple of years now. I know how he thinks. He wants me to be better than him, so he’s as open with me as he feels he can be.’

‘How did that help you work it out?’

‘Raine doesn’t get careless. So to find the leak... It would be hard for people to spy on me as I’d been their commander till this morning. You were the obvious choice.’

‘Raine said you had insight.’ Until now, Gramps had been the only other person Jac knew who had the same intuitive understanding of people that she did. ‘Karim was Luc’s closest friend. How’s he taking it?’

‘Badly I should think. Bel’s with him now. I’m waiting for her to come back with news.’

‘I found it hard to believe it was you.’

He raised an eyebrow. ‘That’s reassuring.’

The door opened. Bel walked in, smiled at Jac and curled long limbs sinuously on the blanket next to Kit, pushing back blue-silk braids as she spoke.

‘Karim’s really unhappy. Not just feeling betrayed, but starting to blame himself for not noticing what Luc was doing. I’ve calmed him down a bit. Might help if you could talk to him as well.’

‘Sure. Will you stay with Jac? It’s a weird time to be arriving at the Warren.’

‘Of course. Oh, Raine had a quick look at the transcript and can’t see we need to move out instantly. He’ll be up all night going through details of Luc’s messages.’

Kit ducked through the low doorway and left surprisingly silently for someone so tall. Bel turned her attention to Jac.

‘This must be a real overload, just as you arrive.’

‘It started before I even got here. I found Raine in a blood-soaked ditch after he’d been tortured.’

Bel was silent and thoughtful for a moment. ‘That fills in a bit of his story I’m sure he’ll never tell us himself. He takes on too much. We want to give him more support, but he says he doesn’t want to put pressure on us too soon.’

‘Who is ‘we’?’

‘Kit, Greg, Karim and myself. We’re sort of a foursome.’

‘You mean you have three boyfriends?’

‘Yes.’ She laughed at Jac’s puzzled look. ‘What?’

‘Oh. It sounds complicated.’

Bel gave what might have been a philosophical shrug. ‘It seems to work out.’ She sat quietly for a moment, arms around her knees, suddenly introspective.
